Selimiye Mosque
It is in Üsküdar, opposite the Selimiye Barracks. It was commissioned by
Sultan Selim the 3rd in 1805. Its minarets destroyed from a strong gale
were rebuilt in 1823. It underwent a restoration work in 1964. It is
surrounded by a wide courtyard with four entrances. It is one of the
mosques built in Baroque style. The rectangular planned building is made
of hewn stone. The great dome of four walls and 24 windows is supported
by one small tower on each edge. The interior is adorned by verses and
calligraphic works. The interior of the mosque is rich in marble and
wood engravings. The mihrab and mimbar is made of porphyry marble. The
latest congregational area is sheltered by 5 domes over 6 marble columns.
There are two minarets with single balcony with two storey sultan
offices. It also treasures the graves of Zibifer Kadın, wife of Sultan
Selim the 3rd and Minister of Finance Mehmed Hasip Pasha.
